Raymond van Barneveld lit up the opening night of the Stan James.com World Matchplay with a sensational nine-dart finish in Blackpool. The Dutchman became only the second player in the tournament’s history to achieve the feat, emulating Phil Taylor who managed it in 2002. He thrashed Denis Ovens 10-1, with the nine-darter coming in the 10th leg as he posted back-to-back 180s and then took out 141 with treble 20, treble 19 and double 12. Van Barneveld has not played darts for two months and spent some time in South Africa watching Holland in the World Cup so he admitted the nine-dart finish had come as a total shock to him. “It’s an unbelievable feeling, I wasn’t playing too well in the first part of the game – in the first five or six legs I couldn’t find the treble 20. I don’t know where the nine-darter came from, but I’m so happy to have hit it. The feeling gets better every time.” “I have got the fire back in my belly now and the hunger to win.”
