www.reefari.com Reefari had a quiet day and unreel weather and of course decided to go for a quick fish, here’s the report, not bad for a half day trip with some great cod caught on lures. Also in the middle of a reef closure so all fish were released, and were very grateful. The Berkley Gulp, 7 Nuclear Chicken had just reached the bottom and within seconds was well and truly smashed, the Nuclear Chicken went off all right!! A good battle followed and a nice large Goldspot (also known as an estuary cod) reluctantly surfaced. We were right in the middle of a closed reef season, perfect weather and still keen to wet a line, game plan was to target some Giant Trevally on lures and troll for Spanish Mackerel. Luckily for this Goldspot Cod he was quickly released after a few happy snaps. After a couple of drifts, our secret spot was firing and with two more Goldspot cod caught and a couple of nice Nannygai, which also unfortunately for us had to be released, it was time to call it quits and head further afield. All we were getting were quality reef fish, not the trevally we were chasing, Tuff I Know. One of the most exciting forms of fishing is chasing GTs with Poppers, and huge surface strikes the norm. Working one of our favourite rocks, and GT hangouts, two 20kg monsters came up for a look and quickly made short work of the popper, a quick burst of drag and that was it, Gone!! GTs dont muck around and lasted all of about 30 secs. Tony was left Speechless, and blown away …
Yeah It had a fairly good lure on it, about 4 inches long, I think they were trolling for spanish because the rod holder was on the end of the handle
Sounds a good score, G Loomis are good rods, and same with Shimano. Provided the reel is serviced and still works well, you should be able to catch a good variety of reef fish,
Cheers Greg
Hey i found a rod on the bottom out on the reef, G-loomis force lite, with a shimano 6000fb reel, I got it fixed up because 3 bearings were seized, what would I be able to catch with it,
Was some good fun on the lures, and pretty impressed with a nice cod on a popper,
Cheers Greg
never fail to impress, boys…keep them coming
We were using the poppers up around the Islands or rocks for Giant Trevally, hooked one up but he busted us up pretty quick. We were working the poppers across the surface and that’s how we got the flowery cod. Pretty rare and unusual catch,
Cheers Greg
Hi, We were using soft plastics and poppers, Just jig the soft plastics up and down on the bottome, These were berkley gulps and am impressed how well they work.
the popper doesn’t stay on the surface????? so how did u catch a cod???????
what’s the technique??????u let the bait touch the bottom then u move it upward?????
I think our cod are different, we get coral trout, which someone from the US called grouper. Check out our Coral trout video and see if the same.
Cheers Greg
Was a good day, and got some good fish on the lures,
cheers Greg
and do those cod have anyy relation to grouper in the atlantic?
man greg, just seeing the color and look of that fish makes me so hungry i need some grouper for the grill i hate this time of year
Was a top catch, a flowery cod on a popper, 1st I’ve seen, smashed the lure about a metre from the rocks up on the surface, EXCELLANT!!
Cheers Greg
