The boat’s mast was broken — ruining satellite phone reception — and was dragging with the sail in the ocean, said search coordinator Mick Kinley, acting chief of the Australia Maritime Safety Authority that chartered a commerical jet for the search. But the keel was intact, the yacht was not taking on water and Abby was equipped for the conditions, he said. “The aircraft (crew) spoke to her. They described her as an “expert sailor”. HOw many ocean crossings had she done prior to the start? I’ve sailed over 3/4 of the way around the world( not alone), in the days of the sextant and no electronic navigation equipment. I’ve been in an equivalent storm, huge waves, high winds, with one other crew. It took both of us to put out drag anchors, lash the sail down, and surf down every wave perfectly so we wouldn’t broach. God is on the throne, God only knows the power of the sea.
