Women in the Martial Arts

Something I put together from a discarded documentary project. It used to be online until pulled for musical copyright issues last year. I’m putting it back up under the ‘fair use’ clause. This is also a homage to an excellent martial arts videographer, Andy Helm, who passed in 2007.

    I took martial arts in high school, and I can tell you this: the women in martial arts are deadly.

  2. hardpack187 says:

    @Keaos0 I agree that the move shows incredible strength and balance. And I’m not judging it based on it’s effectiveness in combat. I realize it’s meant to look cool and that’s pretty much all. What I’m trying to figure out, though, is why women use this move so often in competition and why men use it so rarely. The one time I’ve seen a guy do this was in the movie Sidekicks with Chuch Norris. (watch?v=gCEzQqG24Qc @5:25)

    @hardpack187
    I look at it as a demonstration of strength and balance which is really difficult without at least 1 foot firmly on the ground. As for the guys doing crazier stuff maybe they just have more power and torque in their movements. But either way, it’s all insane physical perfection and more of an emphasis on how far the human body can be pushed; as opposed to functionality in combat. It’s like Staff twirling, nobody does all that fancy stuff in combat; combat staffs too heavy for that

    @hardpack187 that is true and stupid girls can do what boys do but it is suppouse that flexibility is for girls but is more common to se girls tricking than boys kicking if one day i see i boy that kicks like chloe bruce i will be in love

  6. hardpack187 says:

    @masparamore I’ve seen guys perform high kicks before, that’s not what I meant. I’m talking about the full rotation with one foot on the floor and the other doing flutter high kicks. When I watch martial arts tournaments on TV, the girls ALWAYS have that move in their repertoire, but the only time I’ve seen a guy do it was Chuck Norris in the film “Sidekicks”.

  7. masparamore says:

    @myjanuary151987 but there are a lot of many girls in street fight not this ones but you can find them in web

  8. masparamore says:

    @hardpack187 need to investigate high kick boy steven horst one of my favorite girl tricking mackensi emory and there are a lot more but they are hidding in youtube

  9. hardpack187 says:

    @masparamore I get what you’re saying. But my question is, why is it so hard to find a video of a girl doing doing the acrobatic moves? And why do you almost never see guys doing the rapid-fire-high-kick circle? It’s just something I noticed that irked me.

  10. myjanuary151987 says:

    @masparamore Thank you, captain.

  11. masparamore says:

    @myjanuary151987 almost all of them are forms are for show not for fight

  12. masparamore says:

  15. 428ghost says:

    @mraxus Karyne Belanger from Quebec.

  16. mraxus says:

    who is in 3:15?

  17. CosmoNaut18 says:

    interesting…..mostly kicking (especially mostly round kicks) and mainly with right leg. Just because you are very flexible doesn’t mean you should focus on a couple things. There is more to martial arts than just flexibility. There is strength and endurance also. Let alone balance and focus!!

    I can’t believe how much crap I am reading..These ladies have skills..They don’t do flips and the guys do?? How many fights have you seen won by a flip..And I didn’t see no pink belts, only black.. And I assure you that every one of those ladies earned them..I have been in the arts for most of my life and I am 48 years old..My deepest respect to Chloe and the rest of the ladies..And to you guys that wish you were that good, practice, practice,practice,oh and did I mention practice..

  22. 428ghost says:

    @GODSCHAIRETYCASE From 46 through 50 seconds are: Tatjana Arkenkow (blue gi holding leg, not sure on the spelling), Karin Boulanger (black gi jumping into splits from holding her leg) and Chloe Bruce (blue gi top, white bottoms, holding her leg).

    I can’t speak for the first two women, but Chloe Bruce demonstrated on video that she’s just as good with her left leg.

  23. GODSCHAIRETYCASE says:

    1st, who is the young lady in the blue gi (@48 secs.in)?, 2nd anybody notice that they all use only their rt. leg? With all due Respect, they should also use their left leg to be really impressive. But, then again I have taught for quite a few years & the students had to be just as good with both. Their is NO DISRESPECT intended here.

  24. hmkiro says:

    the girl at 3.30 is so nice !!!!

  25. hardpack187 says:

    Why to female martial artists ALWAYS do that rapid fire high kick move? It looks really stupid. And I understand that is a very difficult technique, and I can’t even come close to doing it, but it looks a little silly and has been done TO DEATH. Female martial artists seem to focus more on showing off their flexibility more than anything else. The guys on YouTube do a lot of impressive jumping, twisting kicks, yet the women keep their feet firmly on the ground.

    Can anyone offer some insight?
