Extreme Kayak Shark Fishing pt 3, A LULU of a Blacktip Shark

Gus & I go kayak fishing in the 10000 islands of south Florida, and I hook a good-sized blacktip shark. This video was done with a helmet cam, and it gives you the perspective of being in the cockpit of the 22″-wide sea kayak, as though you were catching the shark yourself. Be sure to watch all 3 parts – it gets better as it continues. All 3 segments will take a whole 15 minutes out of your life – I think it’ll be worth it. This is the final part. Please leave comments, but understand… the PETA stuff will be deleted. One of my concerns, is that beginning kayak fishers will read the reports that I write, watch the You Tube videos, etc., and get the impression that this is an established sport, and that anyone with a kayak and a fishing rod can go out and do it. I do not mean to give that impression. Fishing for shark, tarpon, amberjack, cobia, etc. from kayaks is NOT for the uninitiated. There are real risks, and real dangers involved. Sure, it’s exciting, but it is “extreme kayak fishing”. When you go after these species and other large species, you are dealing with an apex predator that is capable of putting a real hurt on you when things go wrong. You need to know the risks, and be prepared… and even then, things can still go wrong. If you are thinking about doing extreme kayak fishing, then you need to understand that you are taking the risks upon yourself. I understand that, and accept that. I am not new to kayaking. I have been kayaking for about 15 years, and

@skinkayaker What’s wrong with having a cat video;)

  4. woodkayaker says:

Thank you! I’m glad you enjoyed the video. Bull sharks have quite the reputation for aggressive behavior, so be careful! And get it on video – I’d love to see it!

looks like an adventure!! camping out on an island and shark fishing from a kayak for some food! well done mate. I’m looking to catch a bull shark from my local river soon. did feel bit sad seeing him all tired there after giving up and just calmly swimming but thats the way it goes. good luck for future catches

  6. woodkayaker says:

It is a lot of fun – especially the “sleigh ride”! Thanks for commenting!

Nice job Woodkayaker!! IBMills241 obviously is a keyboard tuffguy who’s never caught a fish on a kayak. The thrill is 10x that on a boat or on shore!!

  10. skinkayaker says:

IBMills241 – WTF do YOU have to say about it? You have a pussy video about a cat walking on a fence. You wouldn’t know extreme if it bit you on the ass.

  11. IBMills24I says:

are you freaking kidding me? wtf man a almost 5 foot shark is it? i expected at least 8-10 foot….you sir need to look up the word extreme

My trouble is catching something OTHER than Black Tips and Hammerheads. Nothing else when fishing Honeymoon Island with Pinfish. Good fights, but I need something new. I need to take a trip with someone who knows what they’re doing…

  13. woodkayaker says:

Thanks! Be careful though. Be sure to read all of the stuff I wrote about the video – click “more info” in the upper right of this page, for some safety tips.

i envy you man,, ive always wanted to catch a shark.. never did… ill get it one day.. for sure

  15. bms9347 says:

Thanks Don. I checked out your wood framed and skinned kayak website. I only wish my yak could have a sleek hull like yours while paddling out, then convert to my ultra stable plastic tub for fishing. I am actually going to look real hard at the new Ocean Kayak Torque with the integrated electric motor. I am 56 and have several pounds of metal hardware in my lower spine, so long paddles in my “poly barge” are out of the question. I am fisherman first/kayaker second.

    thx again.

  16. woodkayaker says:

Sure – glad to help. I started out with the Pentax W30 a couple of years ago, then the W40. I am now using the Pentax W60. It has high resolution (10 megapixel), uses up to 8 gig memory cards, and is capable of high resolution video. I used a cheap helmet cam for the blacktip video – the Oregon Scientific ATC2K. You can get them for under $100 these days. Poor resolution, but it gets the video, and it’s waterproof! It takes up to a 2 gig card. The Pentax W60 sells for around $250.

  17. bms9347 says:

    Hey Don,
I thought I saw you mention what model camera you used. Now I can’t find it. Maybe I’ve sat out in the sun too long! Can you help with camera brand, model #, ect.? Thanks in advance.

  18. bms9347 says:

    Hi Don,
Not even gunna try to top that in Indiana. My kayak is in my Mother-in-Law’s garage near Tampa Bay. We try to fly down a couple times a year. So while my other half is busy shopping, visiting, and sitting out in the sun, I’ll be out looking for a tow in the bay. Love your videos, keep ‘em coming.

  19. woodkayaker says:

WOW!!! I have just one question… How are you EVER going to top that, fishing in Indiana? What an exciting catch – I hope you got pictures!
    Don

  20. bms9347 says:

Preface: Before last month, I have never even sat in/on a kayak. I recently picked up a cheap used Ocean Caper 11′ SOT. I outfitted it with the usual fishing gear. I’m from Indiana but my first kayak fishing trip was in the Tampa Bay area. I was lucky enough to catch (and release unharmed) a nearly 4-foot bonnethead shark. WHAT A BLAST THESE THINGS ARE ON LIGHT TACKLE! I used 12 lb. braid with a 30# florocarbon leader. I never once felt “un-safe”. Good ones to learn on. Great Fun.

  21. woodkayaker says:

It’s pretty easy. Cut from the top, about 3/4″ wide steaks, then remove the skin from the outside, and the cartilage from the inside – that’s it. The milk removes the urea from the meat – important step.

  22. MichaelCorbitt says:

Cool thanks Don…So just cut the meat away from the cartilage?

  23. woodkayaker says:

We were camping out of the kayaks for 5 days when I caught this shark – no room in the kayak for a 5 foot long cooler… don’t even own one.

Good luck going after anything big in the kayak – be safe! Read the full description of the video for safety tips. Keep the drag LOOSE! Too tight, and that big fish will take your gear, or pull you over.

    Don

  24. woodkayaker says:

Sure, Michael. It’s a mild-flavored & totally boneless white meat. Sharks have layers of cartiledge, instead of bones. I soaked the steaks in milk for a few hours, and then discarded the milk, then cooked as you would cook any other fish. Blacktips & spinners are good – I can’t tell you about other species – check out Johnny Ceviche’s videos & ask him about makos & threshers.

    Don

  25. MichaelCorbitt says:

Is any type of shark good eating?

  26. BeckumOutdoors says:

@MrSchneeky Thanks, great tip i will do it! We will be filming soon and will film the tip you sent me!

  27. MrSchneeky says:

..Nice, enjoyable vid.. As for aquiring the fiddlers, take a plastic barrel or bucket, cut it into sections cross-ways (rings), and toss those on the herds of fiddlers. Pick’em up at your leisure. Works better on sand flats than in the grass.
..Then again, there’s nothin like a good ‘ol FIddler Rodeo with a friend or two. An “adult beverage” or two can make it even funnier. Thanks fellas. d:^) Schneeks..

  28. SuperBigmac52 says:

what size of hook are you guys using? Also what kind of hook is it?and by that i mean like circle or what?

  29. ScopedOUT2 says:

Today was my first day ever to fish. I’ve got to save it was the most annoying thing to learn how to throw my reel into the water, but I never gave up hope. I went for one last throw and got me a giant sheephead. I couldn’t believe fishing could be so fun.

It felt so good to fish, that I wish I could just breed so many native species of fish and release them to their native wild waters so others can enjot what I did.

  30. BeckumOutdoors says:

We are fishing on the Georgia coast, a beautiful place we call home.

  31. fl4v0rfu11 says:

    where y’all fish’n at?

  32. strikenetter says:

true, i didn’t think about the raccoons and the extra trip
    Thanks for the vid !

  33. BeckumOutdoors says:

I know of a trap that people use but it seems to be about as easy to just pick them up. We can get plenty to fish with in a very short time. People have trouble with raccoons getting into the traps and you have to make an extra trip to put it out.

  34. strikenetter says:

Have you ever tried a trap of any kind ? I don’t even know if you can trap em ! ???

  35. BeckumOutdoors says:

Yes, it works me out a bit, i am not getting any younger. Sheepshead fishing is lots of fun and underrated. They are tasty too!

  36. strikenetter says:

Neat techniques and pretty sheeps ! Would have love to have been there when you were chasing those fiddlers ! LOL

  37. EastCarolinaOutdoors says:
