As someone who has been to Wrigley hundreds of times, this is great video and one of the oldest I know of. Interesting to see the red line el train passing between the buildings at 2:17 and to see the SRO crowd hanging on the ramps to the upper deck. A lot has changed at Addison and Clark in Chicago but much has remained the same.

@johnmeyer77 Was it game 1 or 2 ??? Great footage ! I love the guy on the bullhorn introducing the Cubs as they take the field . Well if it is Howard Ehmke pitching that should narrow down what Game it was. great historical ffotage. i believe you said that MLB has it . I hope you were compensated.

    @SPennell
Not shocking since the 1931 A’s lost to the Cardinals in 7 games. Still, if one wants to compare 3 year runs I might put the 1929-31 A’s over the 1926-28 Yankees, mainly because the ’26 team wasn’t all that distinguished.

    neat!

  8. robphilll22 says:

Wrigley Field looks much the same except no IVY walls and the outfield bleachers were much closer. The scoreboard is lower in center field. Great movie footage.Bravo!

  9. SPennell says:

Gannable…The Phil A’s were certainly an outstanding team…however I was a friend of Waite Hoyt who pitched for the 1931 A’s as well as the Yankees of the 1920′s. I once asked him to compare the ’31 A’s to the ’27 yankees and he emphatically told me the Yankees were far superior !

  10. SPennell says:

GREAT historical footage…Thank you for posting !

I am a ballpark vendor at Wrigley, and a fan of the Cubs. I love anything from this era when they went to the WS pretty much every 3 years …very unlike today. Great to see how different the park looked back then, with pretty much the same buildings on Waveland & Sheffield. Thanks for uploading this. Wonderful!

  14. dmnewton says:

@dmnewton Sorry, Herald Examiner posted the scoreboard. And I think the announcer was closer to 5:00 than 5:30.

  15. dmnewton says:

If that was indeed Ehmke warming up, then this would be Game 1, played on Tuesday, October 8th. A dark day in Cubs history. No one expected Connie Mack to open with Ehmke, a spot-starter. Ehmke had been attending Cubs games for about 2 weeks before the Series, and he knew how to pitch to them. He ended up striking out 13 Cubs, and pitching a complete game 3-1 win. The A’s went on to win the Series in 5 games.

Exactly 3 weeks later, it was a darker day for everyone; 10/29/29 “black Tuesday”

  16. dmnewton says:

Noticing a couple of interesting things: About 5:30 note the PA announcer on the field giving the starting lineups via a huge megaphone. And at about 6:00 see The Chicago Tribune reporting play-by-play via a large (possibly electric) scoreboard mounted on the El. Before TV if you didn’t have a ticket, this was the best way to find out what was happening. Note the large crowd watching. (Not sure if this would have been on radio).

  17. alexcubs25 says:

compare Wrigley to what it looks like in the footage, to today.

  18. elFlakation says:

Nice quality for being this old..

  19. uncromulent says:

The flag day footage looks like it was shot on Friday, June 20, 1930. I see that the schedule on the scoreboard has all the teams that played each other on that date, the crowd looks like about 35,000 (the reported attendance for that day) and the Cubs were out of town on actual flag day (June 14).

I notice if you look carefully at about 3:50 into it, when facing the right field stands after the flag has been hoisted, you can see an El train going by between the houses on Sheffield.

  21. bigfilmhat says:

I read off of Wikipedia that retiring Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens was at this game at the age of 9. As a Cubs fan his day was sabotaged by Howard Ehmke and his tricky delivery.
