Michael Jordan 1992: 50pts Vs. Denver Nuggets

A 50 point game against a losing team was extremely rare for MJ. MJ usually cruised in 2nd gear against these teams so the Bulls could ‘scrimmage’. But in this case, the awful Nuggets gave MJ some early jumpers and he just had to shoot. With his jumper on a string and a handful of relaxed, finesse drives, I’m not sure if MJ actually broke a sweat in this game and it absolutely appeared as if he was just playing in his backyard with his kids. I guess that’s what happens when you shift into 3rd gear against a bad team and you happen to be MJ. But there was one big kid named Mutombo and perhaps this was just part of MJ’s habit of dominating every Big Man in his career. Or, maybe because MJ had an off shooting night at 10-22 at 45.5% the night before was the reason why he shot a bit more at 58% here. Or maybe he was just tuning up for the coming playoffs. But whatever the case, this is a rare gem to see since MJ never cared for the Nuggets and bad teams in general. And because the Nuggets were so bad and the game was meaningless, this game is not even considered a blip on MJ’s resume. What is interesting to see is how the Nuggets started to send 2-3 men on MJ as the game wore on. MJ just resorted to his turns and fades at that point to produce the same result. I do remember Mutombo making one excuse around this time. Responding to criticism from the press about the Nuggets’ horrendous uniforms, Mutombo said, “It’s hard to play good when you look so bad.”

    Hoopsencyclopedia you made a great point in your video description that people should take notice of when comparing Jordan to Kobe. Jordan didn’t pile up big points vs. mediocre teams; he scored big against tough opponents when it mattered showing how Jordan wanted to will his team to win at any cost. Kobe scores big points vs. bad teams (81 vs. the Raptors and 61 vs. the Knicks in 2009) Phil said Michael scores big on the enemy’s top player to take out their heart, while Kobe chases records.

    hoopsencyclopedia whoa, just what else can I say. People who play basketball should all learn how to dunk, I only just not too long ago completed the workout course at 50-inch-vertical(dot)com – it’s the best program available (I m only 5’10!)

    hoopsencyclopedia dude, just what else can I say. People who have fun playing basketball need to all learn the way to dunk, I only recently completed the exercise course over at 50-inch-vertical[dot]com – I wish I could’ve dunked when I was still in the local bball tournament! (I am only 5’6!)

    @joelb9 I don’t quite understand what you’re saying so please clarify. As for me, I think MJ is one of the most skilled , fundamentally sound, and complete players in the history of the game on both ends of the court. He could literally do it all, and with incredible consistency which is a true measure of the completeness and refinement of one’s skillset. Not to mention that he dominated in a physically more demanding defensive era.

  5. joelb9 says:

    @uberathlete you said more skilled and he isn’t all-around player. Unlike MJ is all-around and more skilled

    @SamuraiSwoosh

    lol at you thinkin magic isn’t a better passer and playmaker is beyond me…it’s like you won’t give magic his credit it isn’t his fault he played with one of the best centers of all time…magic is not vastly better than bird but besides range magic does everything slightly better except rebounds which both are good at…magic can play multiple positions and makes player better imo why anyone would pick bird over magic is another mystery that alludes me

  8. SamuraiSwoosh says:

    @thegoldenhero Kareem was the Lakers leading scorer, and arguably their best player my dude. Not really … Larry Bird was a very good passer. Excellent play maker, could rebound as well or better than Magic. Both weren’t great defenders. LMAO @ acting like Magic is vastly superior to Bird. If anything they are equal. And I’d still take Bird over Magic.

  9. thegoldenhero says:

    @SamuraiSwoosh

    sure kareem was as valuable a center of kareem skill is really hard to come by but who won the ring for lakers on his rookie season and was finals mvp in his rookie year? I’ll wait lol larry bird has better range shooter but besides that magic is better in every other way

  10. SamuraiSwoosh says:

    @thegoldenhero So is Larry Bird … and yes, I’d take Larry Bird over Magic. Hell, Magic was arguably the best player on his team. Kareem was just as if not more valuable.

  11. thegoldenhero says:

    @SamuraiSwoosh

    i know your dumbass not just say isiah thomas and larry bird are better than magic johnson…Magic is top ten best players ever in the nba

  12. 69points says:

    look at Kobe’s physical condition of today, he’s getting slower and looking tired !!!!!!!

  13. 69points says:

    @vip129870 MJ didn’t have to practice that much cause he was born to be the best … lol, like Larry Bird said “god in disguise” !!!!

  14. SammySmooth says:

    most effortless 50 point game I’ve ever seen, even from him

  15. irin1 says:

    kobe would be less the athlete he is today if he played back in mj’s era he is still struggling to learn what mj was born with A pure knowledge of skills take over any and every game sick or not period

    lol.

  17. SamuraiSwoosh says:

    Larry Bird was better than Magic, IMO … In their absolute physical prime I think Isiah Thomas was a better player than Magic Johnson as well. Jordan is the GOAT.
