Michael Jordan 1997: 50pts Vs. Miami Heat

In just the 4th game of the 1997 season, MJ turned it up on his old rival. The peaking Heat went huge that year with 61 wins. But, the Bulls were the champs coming off their record 72 win season and besides, MJ never let his guard down when Pat Riley was in town. Phil Jackson always clashed with Riley as the two were considered the best coaches so MJ had to back up you know who. MJ also loved to play against Alonzo. Riley would always say, the difference wasn’t the coaching, but #23. “Screw zen and all that, you have 23 and I don’t.” Shooting 55% in this 50 pt game (modest by MJ’s standards since he averaged 60.4% in his 39 games going 50+ in his career), the game was in absolute control by MJ’s mastery. The heat had no answer for his touches and shot creation. Hitting in-your-face fadeaways left and right, MJ, at age 33, looked like he hadn’t left from the first 3-peat. He also reminded us that the greatest player ever was also the greatest ever at making circus shots. But then again, did anyone forget in the first place?

    50 points on 33 shots! That is over looked other players score 50 but they’ll do it on 45-55 shots.

    greatest player to ever touch a basketball!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. HonoreT35 says:

    @75samuel75 There are videos of Hakeem teaching Howard moves. Absolutely it was better before. And back then they had basketball IQ which helped them in longevity. I can’t see todays PF/C last too long because once their athletic ability goes down, their game will founder. Back then even shitty-knees Ewing could still be brilliant.

  9. 75samuel75 says:

    @msaherds If you take the PF/C position in the NBA, it is actually less athletic than it was with the top players in the 80′s and 90′s. Or would you pick today’s PF/C players, like Howard, Gasol, Amare and Kevin Love over Kareem, McHale, Ewing, Robinson, Malone x2 (Moses & Karl), Barkley, Shawn Kemp (most athletic PF ever by the way), Hakeem…the list can go on forever. Not to mention those guys had way more skill and a grasp of basketball fundamentals, something that is missing today.

  10. DuffyHillion373 says:

    hoopsencyclopedia dude, just what else is there to say?. People who play basketball need to all study the way to dunk, I simply just a short while ago completed the coaching course over at “50-inch-vertical[dot]com” – It’s a must see! (I m merely 5’10!)

  11. msaherds says:

    90s basketball were mature men..Its wasnt jus MJ..it was Tim Hardaway and Alonso Mourning, Karl Malone, Gary Payton, Reggie Miller, Hakeem Olajuwon, Charles Barkley..today’s premium players are overhyped..got size maybe athletic ability but not soo much skilll

    what i’m tripping on… is miami fans are cheering for MJ scoring on them

  18. ladyvince10 says:

    @MrJ2k9 yeah that’s true i also did.

  19. frusionnn says:

    @LacedBoy couldn’t agree any less

  20. LacedBoy says:

    @frusionnn It was the worst thing the NBA could do to Barkley and Malone because it just gave MJ more fuel to prove that he WAS the MVP of the league and they were so unlucky to be standing in the way of him and a championship.

  21. frusionnn says:

    @osirisrox1 probably more than 10 rings in today’s era during his prime. because he already had 9 straight titles won in the 90s if he was in uniform all of the 90s (1991-1999). we all know the Bulls had a triple 3 peat won.

  22. LegendElTerror says:

    @frusionnn SO DAMN RIGHT

    and i question to Kobe’s fans and Lebron’s fans went they retire the number of them is gonna retire from a team that they NEVER PLAY only MJ THE BEST can do that!!!

  23. HonoreT35 says:

    I love the Rodman hand dip cuz that means “AND ONE”! And loved the jordan wince when he spun up and nailed that 360 around Mourning. Priceless!

  24. frusionnn says:

    3:59 gotta love Rodman signaling it’s an and-one =D

  25. frusionnn says:

    @LegendElTerror he also deserved the MVP in 1993 over Barkley. he should have had 7 league MVPs (to become the all-time most league MVPs) but he was so damn good the NBA just didn’t give it to him every damn year to give other players ”a chance” as well. and who knows, if he was there all of 17 months he was gone for baseball, he probably would have gotten league MVP in 1994 and/or 1995 giving him 7-9 league MVPs

  26. Forensic85 says:

    @TheHeadSooter I HAVE TO STAND UP 4 THEM–WE ALL KNOW HOW GUDD THEY ARE–BUT NOBODY IS BELIEVING ANYMORE BUT I STILL WONT GIVE UP HOPE..

  27. TheHeadSooter says:

    @Forensic85 u go 4 the LAL

  28. TheHeadSooter says:

    @Forensic85 thats right man u go 4 the lakers

  29. Forensic85 says:

    @TheHeadSooter Most Def–everything takes time…

  30. TheHeadSooter says:

    @Forensic85 ya i know we will get there

  31. Forensic85 says:

    @WalletBoy35 dont worry were getting there buddy..

  32. w8checkdis says:

    @WalletBoy35 Championships do count & but people compare one person to another who are in different eras. sure some people have more championships than others & that a team is what wins championships but the players role is the most important thing to look at horry was never the the best player in all his champioship teams.If you understand my reply maybe you would be less irritated. I meant no player could be better than MJ if they could beat his individual success along w/ his championship

  33. nay5092013 says:

    at least he’s honest! LMAO!!

  34. mrbriscoe2001 says:

    uh oh..Heat are starting to figure it out….If they play defense,cause turnovers and run in the open court with Lebron and Wade in the open court..they can be truly terrifying..don’t know if they have the size yet for a 7 game series against the elite ,yet….

  35. WalletBoy35 says:

    @w8checkdis Well if championships are what count, then isn’t Robert Horry better than Jordan? Horry has 7 rings. Also, that would mean Bill Russell is the greatest ever because he’s got 11. I get so irritarted when people like you and the announcers define a player by how many championships “he” won. Last I checked, championships are won by teams and not by 1-on-1 play.

  36. WalletBoy35 says:

    @tyyyify You’re such a bandwagoner. And when the day comes that Blake and the Clippers are the entire talk oF LA, you’ll probably start saying Clippers for life… until it’d be the Lakers who are winning again.

  37. WalletBoy35 says:

    @TheDmond18 It’s so stupid when Laker fans mention how many rings or whatever. That right there tells me they’re bandwagoners and only like Kobe or like the Lakers just because of their championship. My team hasn’t won a championship, and I still love them no matter what.

  38. WalletBoy35 says:

    @Forensic85 Just barely being able to beat a 76er team without Andre Igoudala at home nonetheless doesn’t seem like an unstoppable team to me.

  39. CHiSoXx0500 says:

    GET SMASHED ON CHIRSTMAS DAY BY MIAMI !!!..MERRY CHIRTMAS BITCHEZZZ!!!!!

  40. mlking213 says:

    @mickee06

    yeah but they dont see that, they forgot those interviews on the radio where hes dissing that organization and saying they are not committed to winning and how he hated the lakers..lol

  41. mickee06 says:

    @mlking213 also they forgot that 4 summers ago kobe begged the lakers to get him some help or he was leaving.

  42. mlking213 says:

    @3peats

    “BTW look at lebron i wonder why no one wanted to join his team? he had to go and join wades team cause no one wanted to play wit him ….nuff said”

    dumbest comment ever..im done yeah hes obviously a horrible player and Kobe is waaay better in all overall skills.lmao you kids today.

  43. 13war25 says:

    @xFYCNxCHOWDER You forgot that’s why you’re talking about it…

  44. 3peats says:

    @mlking213 BTW look at lebron i wonder why no one wanted to join his team? he had to go and join wades team cause no one wanted to play wit him ….nuff said

  45. 3peats says:

    @mlking213 its not kobes fault great players wanna play with him…oh wait actually ya it is, its because of howcompetitive he is that attracts good players to wanna play with him look artest and barnes both got into it with kobe and they ended up playin wit him its cause they respect him.
    him wanting to leave is how they got gasol so im pretty sure kobe or anyone else doesnt give a shit what u laker haters have to say

  46. mlking213 says:

    @3peats How quickly you forget how much the LAKERS sucked for a couple years after Shaq left lol you guys act like that didn’t happen.

    You guys forget that the LAKERS has all-star caliber player coming off the bench(Odom), y’all forget that he plays with top 3 centers in the NBA right now(Gasol), y’all forget that he plays with a guy that known as one of the best defenders in the league(artest) When he didnt have that his team was horrible.

    And he wanted to leave himself.Forgot?

  47. antonioaquilino77777 says:

    werent steve blake , barnes and especially TEO RATLIFF supposed to be incredible offseason additions to the bench ??? lmfao !!

  48. 3peats says:

    @mlking213 ahahahaha lebron sayin hes an ultimate competitor and he quits in game 5 and game 6??? kobe would never do that ….thats the diffrence and ull see that in the playoffs

  49. mlking213 says:

    @Classik2o Cavs record right now is what again.. they dont suck?
    He was a MJ(Michael Jackson)playing with a bunch of Titos(jackson). The team didnt suck while he was on it but they could never win a finals because they simply didnt have enough.

    You cant say thats lebron fault because he played his heart out(except the last game when the whole team gave up)

    Also im a heat fan, favorite player is Alonzo mourning. I am not a Lebron fan but you groupies are dumb

  50. DuffyHillion373 says:

    Furthermore , I find it difficult to understand this key fact but I took the first step to dunking last week! I primarily practiced the strategy from 50-inch-vertical(dot)com and in only just 3 weeks, I jump 10 ins higher! Dunking is very funnnnn!
