1998 Women’s College Bowling – Kelly Kulick

The final of the 1998 Women’s Intercollegiate Bowling Championships saw Morehead State, anchored by future Team USA member and future PWBA and PBA star Kelly Kulick, face Central Missouri State. The format was a 2-game Baker match, total pins wins. Kulick would need to step up in the 10th and throw a strike to win the title for her team. This might be the final time Bo Burton ever commentated bowling on national television, as his run on the ABC Pro Bowlers Tour ended in 1997. Jay Randolph, one of my favorite bowling announcers, is on the play-by-play. Joined in progress during the second game. I was in attendance at the University of Wisconsin Fieldhouse (directly adjacent to Camp Randall Stadium) in Madison, Wisconsin in 1998 when this match was held. Great memories. Go Badgers!

Indiana Pacers @ Chicago Bulls | 1998 Playoffs | ECF Game 1: Pippen sets the tone

After a rather easy path to the 1998 Conference Finals, Chicago faced Indiana in the playoffs for the first time. Both teams won their second-round series 4-1. To the surprise of the Pacers and Larry Bird, who had just won coach of the year, point guard Mark Jackson was guarded by Scottie Pippen. A smart move by Phil Jackson, because Pippen was able to take away Jackson’s low-post game with his height advantage and defensive intensity. Forced out of his natural game, Jackson committed seven of the Pacers’ 26 turnovers. As great as he was defensively, Pippen shot only 1-for-9 from the field for 4 points. “I knew I was going to sacrifice some of my offensive game when we decided I was going to cover Mark today,” Pippen said. “I told MJ that he was going to have to take care of the bulk of the scoring because of my effort on Jackson.” Jordan, however, had his own struggles and went only 1-for-9 in the first half. The trio of Jordan, Pippen and Kukoc combined for an atrocious 3-for-24 from the field going into the third quarter, while the rest of the team was 9-for-20. Despite poor shooting by the Bulls, the Pacers led only by three at halftime. “I totally lost my rhythm and started missing easy shots,” Jordan said. “It affected my whole thought process in terms of aggression and looking for the shot. The third quarter, I was able to turn that around and become more aggressive and just think about going to the basket more. It worked out.” Jordan keyed a 10-0 run that opened

Chicago Bulls @ Indiana Pacers | 1998 Playoffs | ECF Game 3: Reggie saves the day

A limping Reggie Miller scored 13 of his 28 points in the final 4 1/2 minutes and the Indiana Pacers survived a furious late rally by the Chicago Bulls and climbed back into the Eastern Conference finals with a 107-105 victory in Game Three. “I stepped on Mike’s foot in the middle of the third quarter,” Miller said. Clearly hobbled, Miller nevertheless made three three-pointers, a 20-footer that beat the shot clock and the clinching free throws in the final 4:11. He was the only Pacer to score from the field in the last 6 1/2 minutes. “It loosened up as the game went on,” Miller said. “I knew I couldn’t drive, so I basically just played off their mistakes.” Miller made 9-of-15 shots, including 4-of-7 from behind the arc. Indiana’s bench held a 43-25 scoring advantage, including 20-6 over the final 13-plus minutes. “He said he could go,” Pacers coach Larry Bird said. “He put everything on the line and stepped up and hit the big shots.” Michael Jordan scored 30 points and Scottie Pippen added 23 for the Bulls, who suffered their first road loss of the postseason and had a five-game winning streak snapped. Chicago trimmed an eight-point deficit to 103-102 in just over a minute, but Rose and Davis each made a pair of clutch free throws before Miller sealed it. “He was hurt and I don’t know why we didn’t go at him,” Bulls guard Ron Harper said. “We had a chance in this game and we know we let a golden opportunity slip away.”

Travis Best outdueled Michael Jordan in the final minute with a running bank shot and two free throws as the Indiana Pacers forced a seventh game in the Eastern Conference finals with a 92-89 victory over the Chicago Bulls. “I felt big pressure on those two free throws but I was very confident,” Best said. “It was a big game for us and we took the challenge. We were better focused.” The 5-11 Best, a reserve whose quickness has bothered Chicago throughout the series, snapped an 87-87 tie when he dribbled past Kerr and lofted a tough runner high off the glass with 33 seconds left. “Best made big plays down the stretch,” Bird said. “Our guys stepped up and made big plays. Best was key in this series. His defense was excellent.” “He made two big shots and two big free throws,” Jordan said. “You have to give him credit.” Jordan, who missed a pair of shots in the final minute, tried to drive the lane but slipped and lost the ball. Derrick McKey was fouled with four-tenths of a second to go and made the first before intentionally missing the second, killing the clock. “I actually thought I was tripped,” Jordan said. “I thought I had a clear path to the basket. I started to make my move to the basket and then I started falling.” The Pacers rebounded from a 19-point beating in Game Five and remained unbeaten at home (8-0) in the postseason without a major contribution from Miller, who scored just eight points on 3-of-13 shooting. Miller made clutch shots at the end of Games Three

Indiana Pacers @ Chicago Bulls | 1998 Playoffs | ECF Game 7: “Last Dance” continues

The Chicago Bulls, given chance after chance by the Indiana Pacers, will have a chance at their third straight NBA title. The two-time defending champions, playing their first Game Seven in four years, overcame surprisingly poor shooting by Michael Jordan and Scottie Pippen with timely offensive rebounding in an 88-83 victory that vaulted the Bulls into the NBA Finals against the Utah Jazz. “We definitely got the effort from our players, but the difference in the game was that we got beat to loose balls and on the boards,” Pacers coach Larry Bird said. “We’ve talked about offenssive boards all year. Tonight we were just overmatched. The number of offensive rebounds they got ripped our hearts out.” Even with league rebound leader Dennis Rodman limited to six boards, the Bulls held a 50-34 edge on the glass. Pippen pulled down 12 and Jordan and Luc Longley grabbed nine apiece. Pippen and Jordan combined for 11 offensive rebounds. “Rebounding is a huge part of our offense,” Phil Jackson said. “One of the reasons we do well in that area is we have a lot of people around the boards. We have a sense of just being there when the shots are going up.” The Bulls had more to lose and it showed in the early going. Everyone appeared tentative, including Jordan, who was playing in his first Game Seven in six years. Chicago quickly fell behind as Indiana calmly executed its offense. Jordan’s follow shot 91 seconds into the game gave Chicago a 5-4 lead, but Indiana scored the next 10
