A serious of injuries made 2010/11 a write-off, and this campaign didn’t commence better. Bayer Leverkusen coach Robin Dutt hardly played 35-year-old in the opening games (2011/2012)but Ballack’s experience and eye for aim have emerged as key assets in current weeks. He’s scored two and supplied 3 assists in the final 5 games it is now captain Simon Rolfes’ turn to find himself on the bench. Michael Jordan 1997: 50pts Vs. Miami Heat

In just the 4th game of the 1997 season, MJ turned it up on his old rival. The peaking Heat went huge that year with 61 wins. But, the Bulls were the champs coming off their record 72 win season and besides, MJ never let his guard down when Pat Riley was in town. Phil Jackson always clashed with Riley as the two were considered the best coaches so MJ had to back up you know who. MJ also loved to play against Alonzo. Riley would always say, the difference wasn’t the coaching, but #23. “Screw zen and all that, you have 23 and I don’t.” Shooting 55% in this 50 pt game (modest by MJ’s standards since he averaged 60.4% in his 39 games going 50+ in his career), the game was in absolute control by MJ’s mastery. The heat had no answer for his touches and shot creation. Hitting in-your-face fadeaways left and right, MJ, at age 33, looked like he hadn’t left from the first 3-peat. He also reminded us that the greatest player ever was also the greatest ever at making circus shots. But then again, did anyone forget in the first place?

Michael Jordan 1989: 50pts Vs. Milwaukee Bucks

A classic MJ masterpiece. Jordan in his prime was beyond electric. The Bucks were in town and the Bulls were battling them for the 5th seed so this was a must win game with a playoff atmosphere. Enter Michael Jordan. Playing a cool game through quarters 1-3, MJ took over in the 4th with 26 points in a blur for a comeback win at the buzzer. Going for 50pts while shooting a typical 16-26 for 62%, MJ also took in 8 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals for another stunning, all-around game with a miraculous ending. His usual array of creative drives opened up his mid-range game which then opened up his driving game – as if he needed that. When the chips were down, MJ’s mythical presence once again cast its giant shadow. There is no 6th or 7th gear like Mike’s. A most amazing stat was that MJ was shooting 55% for the year this deep into the season for 7th place in the NBA in FG% while scoring 34.2 ppg. And no, that’s not a typo.

Michael Jordan 1992: 50pts Vs. Denver Nuggets

A 50 point game against a losing team was extremely rare for MJ. MJ usually cruised in 2nd gear against these teams so the Bulls could ‘scrimmage’. But in this case, the awful Nuggets gave MJ some early jumpers and he just had to shoot. With his jumper on a string and a handful of relaxed, finesse drives, I’m not sure if MJ actually broke a sweat in this game and it absolutely appeared as if he was just playing in his backyard with his kids. I guess that’s what happens when you shift into 3rd gear against a bad team and you happen to be MJ. But there was one big kid named Mutombo and perhaps this was just part of MJ’s habit of dominating every Big Man in his career. Or, maybe because MJ had an off shooting night at 10-22 at 45.5% the night before was the reason why he shot a bit more at 58% here. Or maybe he was just tuning up for the coming playoffs. But whatever the case, this is a rare gem to see since MJ never cared for the Nuggets and bad teams in general. And because the Nuggets were so bad and the game was meaningless, this game is not even considered a blip on MJ’s resume. What is interesting to see is how the Nuggets started to send 2-3 men on MJ as the game wore on. MJ just resorted to his turns and fades at that point to produce the same result. I do remember Mutombo making one excuse around this time. Responding to criticism from the press about the Nuggets’ horrendous uniforms, Mutombo said, “It’s hard to play good when you look so bad.”
