They are not afraid of the Detroit Pistons. They are not afraid of the past. And now, the Chicago Bulls are one victory away from eliminating the team that eliminated them from the playoffs the three previous years. Taking a major step toward the NBA Finals, the Bulls defeated the Pistons, 113-107, here this afternoon at the Palace. Chicago leads the Eastern Conference Finals, 3-0, and can eliminate the Pistons by winning Game 4 here Monday afternoon. History says that the Pistons’ two-year reign as NBA champions is about to end. No team in league history has recovered from a 3-0 deficit to win a playoff series. And the Pistons appeared to throw everything they had at Chicago today, yet the Bulls withstood it. “We’ve put the Pistons in a position that they haven’t been in for a long time,” said Michael Jordan, who scored 33 points for the Bulls on 11-for-19 shooting, saving 14 of them for the final quarter. He also had 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 blocks and 2 steals. “In my seven years here, we’ve never been to the finals, and we’ve never beaten this team in the playoffs. We can do both with one more win.” Jordan is playing with tendinitis in both knees, but that has not kept him from being the most dominant player in the series. Whenever the Pistons tried to rally during the fourth quarter, Jordan would make a shot, make a pass or make a defensive play to keep the Bulls in control. “Anytime they need a big shot, they go to Jordan and he completes the play,” Daly said. “He’s …

The franchise was founded as the Fort Wayne Zollner Pistons, a National Basketball League (NBL) team, playing in the gym of North Side High School. Owner Fred Zollner’s Zollner Corporation was a foundry, manufacturing pistons primarily for car, truck and locomotive engines. In 1948, the team became the Fort Wayne Pistons, competing in the Basketball Association of America. In 1949, Fred Zollner brokered the formation of the National Basketball Association from the BAA and the NBL at his kitchen table. From that point on, the Fort Wayne Pistons competed in the NBA. Led by star forward George Yardley, the Fort Wayne Pistons were a very popular franchise and appeared in the NBA Finals in 1955 and 1956, losing both times. Though the Pistons enjoyed a solid local following, their city’s small size made it difficult for them to be profitable. In 1957, Zollner moved the team to Detroit, a much larger city which had not seen professional basketball in a decade. In 1947, they had lost the Detroit Gems of the NBL, who moved to become the Minneapolis Lakers (now the Los Angeles Lakers), and the Detroit Falcons of the BAA, which folded. The new Detroit Pistons played in Olympia Stadium (home of the NHL’s Detroit Red Wings at the time) for their first four seasons, then moved to Cobo Arena. The franchise was a consistent disappointment, struggling both on the court and at the box office. During the 60s and 70s, the Pistons were characterized by very strong individuals and weak teams …

The Pistons had again reached the NBA Finals for the third time in as many years. However, unlike the previous two years, the Los Angeles Lakers were not waiting in the wings. This time, the Pistons would battle the Portland Trailblazers and All-Stars Clyde Drexler and Kevin Duckworth. The teams split the first two games at The Palace. As the series moved to the great northwest, the Pistons had some demons to overcome. They had not won in Portland in 16 years, a streak of 20 consecutive games. Dennis Rodman had an ankle injury and Vinnie Johnson was mired in a three for 25 shooting slump. To make matters worse, about 90 minutes before tip-off, Joe Dumars father, Joe Dumars II, passed away from complications caused by diabetes. On the advice of Joes wife, Daly withheld the information until after the game. The unaware Dumars tallied 33 points and Vinnie Johnson ended his slump with 21 points. After the game, Dumars received the devastating information. Dumars mother insisted that he remain with the team and finish the job they had begun. The Pistons also won Game Four 112-109, to take a commanding three games to one series lead. The Pistons faced a tough test in Game Five. It is often said that a team facing elimination is most dangerous. The Blazers were now forced to play for their playoff lives. The Pistons trailed 90-83 with two minutes left and Isiah Thomas on the bench, bloody from an inadvertent elbow to his nose. The Pistons scored seven consecutive points and with …

In 1990, the Pistons were on there way to their second straight world championship. The only thing in their way was Michael Jordan. After losing the first two games in Detroit, Jordan came out in Game 3 and scored 47 points against the toughest defence maybe ever – which was totally designed to stop Jordan. The “Jordan Rules” didn’t slow Jordan in this game – he shot 17-32FGs (53%) and also had 10 rebounds and 4 assists in the bulls win. This is one of my favourite games ever. Seeing Jordan this pumped up is pretty rare, and it is a pleasure to watch. Enjoy…
