Thousands of folks from across the country demonstrated Friday outside Parliament in Warsaw, Poland, to protest government plans to raise the retirement age to 67. The law at present permits women to retire at 60 years of age and men at 65, however, Prime Minister Donald Tusk wants to raise the retirement age to 67 for all citizens, saying it will boost pensions even though decreasing state debt. The program, supported by numerous economists, has angered the public. The unions are deeply unsatisfied by a new agreement the ruling coalition parties reached Thursday that would allow men and women to go into partial retirement earlier but with lowered monthly payments for the rest of their lives. Piotr Duda, head of the Solidarity trade union, stated the plan gives Poles the choice of “either working until death or swiftly dying of hunger.” The protesters, blowing horns and carrying Solidarity white-and-red banners, were equally vocal. “We are protesting right here simply because we cannot operate till 67 years old, it’s unfair for workers. We would be unable to do something when we are that old. Even our current situation is worse enough, we have to work ten to twelve hours to earn enough cash to get food and raise our kids,” complained one particular worker from Polish Gdansk Shipyard. The workers from the shipyard have decided to hold on protest till June when the European Cup kicks off.
