SOCKEYE SALMON – underwater [HD]

Sockeye salmon (Oncorhynchus nerka), also called red salmon or blueback salmon, is an anadromous species of salmon found in the Northern Pacific Ocean and rivers discharging into it. There are also completely landlocked populations of the same species, which are known as the kokanee. Sockeye salmon is the third most common Pacific salmon species, after pink and chum salmon. The name “sockeye” is believed to be a folk adaptation of the anglicization of sθə́qəy̓, its name in Halkomelem, the language of the indigenous people along the lower reaches of the Fraser River. Sockeye salmon ranges as far south as the Columbia River in the eastern Pacific (though individuals have been spotted as far south as the 10 Mile River on the Mendocino Coast of California) and northern Hokkaidō Island in Japan in the western Pacific, and as far north as Bathurst Inlet in the Canadian Arctic in the east and the Anadyr River in Siberia in the west. Landlocked populations occur in the Yukon Territory and British Columbia in Canada, and in Alaska, Washington, Oregon, California, New York, Utah, Idaho, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming in the United States. Nantahala Lake is the only spot in North Carolina where kokanee salmon are found. Sockeye are blue tinged with silver in color while living in the ocean. Just prior to spawning both sexes turn red with green heads and sport a dark stripe on their sides. Males develop a hump on their back and the jaws and teeth become hooked during their

The old name of the beach is Pantai Pasir Lanun (Pirates’ Sandy Beach) because pirates chose the beach as their hideout due to its calm coast and the availability of fresh water. The beach, located about 36km from Mersing town, has many attractions and activities for visitors. These include boating, canoeing, fishing, camping and jungle trekking to the nearby forest. You can also go for a visit to the Malay villages here, or go for and island excursion and visit the kelong (fish farm) on the way back. The beach is served by four beach resorts which offers budget to mid-range accommodations and meeting facilities. There are also food stalls, rest shades, toilets and shower facilities for day-trippers. A sea sports centre rents out equipment for kayaking, canoeing, fishing and other water-based activities that will make your visit to Penyabong beach a fun experience.
