After the torch is extinguished, Olympics are a fond memory

GOLDEN MEMORIES Olympics was addictive must-see for many local residents By Maria Papadopoulos ENTERPRISE STAFF WRITER BROCKTON — Brockton resident Raqui Gomez and his daughter, Patricia, cheered on athletes competing from two countries during the Olympics — the United States and their native Dominican Republic. “I watched basketball, tennis, baseball,” said Gomez, 43, who came to the United States three years ago. “I liked the swimming, the beach volleyball,” his daughter, Patricia Gomez, 15, said. Gomez’ sister, Miguelina Peralta, is visiting Brockton from their native country, and watched the games with them. “We are trying to follow whether a Dominican gets some medals, and we actually got two — one bronze and one silver, and that’s something,” she said of her nation, which is located in the Caribbean region. Now a memory, this year’s Olympic games in Beijing had several local residents glued to their television sets. “I wish they’d stay longer. I really do,” Denise Conley, 35, of Avon, said of the games. “I really don’t watch television a lot, but I stay for that.” For David Sainsbury of Brockton, the more memorable Olympic moments included the gold medal wins by the US swim team. “That was incredible,” said Sainsbury, 43, who thinks US gold medalist Michael Phelps “is great.” Phelps, with his record eight gold medals in swimming, gave one of the greatest performances in Olympic history.
